Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Inspection in Riverside: What to Know First
A Gelco chimney inspection in Riverside typically runs between $189 and $349 depending on the level of inspection, and most inspections take 45 to 90 minutes from arrival to a written report in your hand. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, which means we’ll give you a written price before we touch anything, and we’ll show you camera footage of exactly what we find. If you own a Gelco fireplace or chimney component and you want to know whether it’s safe to light, this page covers what we look for and what it costs. Call (831) 218-8547 and you’ll get a live person, any hour, any day.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Riverside’s dry summers and cool winter mornings put real stress on fireplace components, and Gelco products have a few failure patterns we see more often than not. Danny Cortes and our crew have opened enough of these units across Riverside, from the older craftsman homes near the Mission Inn to the newer subdivisions up toward Canyon Crest, to know what to look for before the first screw comes out.
- Gelco prefab fireboxes with refractory panel hairline cracks. The refractory panels in Gelco zero-clearance fireboxes absorb heat and give it back slowly. After five to eight burn seasons, we often find hairline cracks radiating from the corners. They look cosmetic but they’re not. Once a crack opens beyond about 1/16 of an inch, heat migrates through to the metal firebox shell behind it. The fix is usually a panel replacement with an OEM Gelco panel or a properly spec’d aftermarket equivalent, and we’ll show you the crack on camera before recommending anything.
- Smoke chamber parging that separates from Gelco throat assemblies. Gelco fireplaces with factory-installed smoke chambers sometimes ship with a thin parge coat over the metal. In Riverside’s temperature swings, that coat can delaminate from the throat. You’ll notice a fine gray dust falling into the firebox between fires. A Level 2 inspection catches this early, and the repair is re-parging the chamber to create a smooth smoke path, which also improves draft.
- Damper clamps that rust and seize on Gelco factory-built units. Riverside’s low humidity helps, but the occasional winter rain plus combustion moisture still takes a toll. We regularly see Gelco damper assemblies where the clamp has seized in the fully open or fully closed position. A blocked damper and a bad Monday morning have a lot in common: neither one lets anything through. We don’t force them, because forcing a seized clamp can bend the damper plate. We free the mechanism, lubricate with a high-temp graphite compound, and replace the clamp if needed.
- Gelco chimney caps with mesh that tears at the mounting tabs. The spark arrestor mesh on Gelco caps is stainless, but the mounting tabs take the brunt of Santa Ana winds. When a tab tears, the cap lifts just enough to let embers out and rain in. During a routine inspection, we check the cap from the flue side and the roof side. A torn Gelco cap is usually replaced with an exact-fit unit or a quality aftermarket equivalent with the same mesh spacing, because the wrong mesh size changes your draft.
- Vermiculite flue liners in older Gelco installs that have absorbed moisture. Some Gelco installations from the 2000s used vermiculite-based flue material. It’s fine until it gets wet. We’ve seen liners in Riverside homes where a small flashing leak let in enough moisture to soften the vermiculite, and once it softens, it spalls. The pieces can drop into the smoke shelf or the firebox. This is exactly the kind of thing a camera inspection catches, because it’s invisible from the firebox opening.

Our Gelco Chimney Inspection Process
Every Gelco job we do in Riverside follows the same six steps, whether it’s a Level 1 inspection on a fireplace you use every week or a Level 2 real estate inspection for a house you’re buying in the Wood Streets.
- 1
The call. You tell us what you have, what the fireplace has been doing, and what you’re worried about. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it means before we touch anything.
- 2
The arrival. A background-checked, uniformed technician arrives on time. Shoe covers go on at the door. Drop cloths go down around the hearth and the path to the fireplace.
- 3
The visual pass. We inspect the firebox, refractory panels, damper, smoke chamber, and accessible flue sections. We photograph everything and note what’s visible to the naked eye.
- 4
The camera pass. We run a video inspection camera up the full flue length, watching for cracks, spalling, offset joints, and moisture damage. You’ll see the footage in real time if you want to stand with us, or we’ll pull stills for your report.
- 5
The findings review. We sit down and walk through what the camera showed. If something is worn but safe, we say so and tell you what to watch. If something needs work, we show you exactly why, then write the price. Nothing gets recommended without visual proof.
- 6
The cleanup and the report. Drop cloths come up, the hearth gets wiped down, and we take a photo of the clean-up before we leave. You get a written inspection report with photos, and every repair we perform is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Why Riverside Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney Riverside for Gelco Work
We don’t rush through a Gelco inspection, because the families in these Riverside homes use their fireplaces for real: holiday mornings with kids in pajamas, quiet weeknights when the Santa Ana winds are up and the house feels colder than the thermostat says. You want the fire to light and the air to stay clean. We work to a written care promise on every visit: a price before we start, shoe covers and drop cloths on the floor, pet-safe products where there’s a choice, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise, and it’s on every job. If something isn’t done right, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we make it right. And when your Gelco repair calls for a liner or a cap system, we stock and install DuraFlex and HeatShield components alongside Gelco parts, so we’re not married to one brand when another gives you a better fix. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, not a manufacturer program.
FAQs
No. An inspection by an independent service provider does not void a Gelco factory warranty, and in most cases, an annual documented inspection is exactly what the warranty’s care requirements call for. We photograph everything and give you a written report you can file if a warranty claim ever comes up.
Most Gelco inspections in Riverside run 45 to 90 minutes. A Level 1 visual inspection skews faster, and a Level 2 camera inspection with a full findings review runs longer, especially on two-story homes where roof access adds time. We’ll give you a window when you book and we hold to it.
We use OEM Gelco parts when availability and budget allow, and we’ll always tell you which one we’re quoting. For refractory panels, caps, and dampers, we often have access to quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original specs at a lower price. The decision is always yours, and you’ll see the part before it goes in.
A Level 2 inspection includes everything in Level 1, plus a camera scan of the full flue and inspection of accessible attic, crawlspace, and roof areas around the chimney. A Level 3 inspection goes further, which means removing portions of the chimney structure to access concealed areas, and it’s only called for when a Level 2 finds something serious. For most Gelco owners in Riverside, Level 2 is the right depth, especially during a real estate transaction.
We show you the camera footage and the photos, explain what the problem is and what might happen if it’s left alone, and give you a written price for the fix. If it can safely wait, we tell you that too, and we note it in your report with a timestamp on the footage. Call (831) 218-8547 for a free estimate and an honest second opinion.
