Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
We install Gelco chimney caps and Gelco-compatible caps throughout Riverside, and most Gelco cap installations run between $195 and $420 fully installed, depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the old cap has rusted fast to the flue tile. We keep common Gelco sizes on the truck, so many Riverside homeowners get the cap replaced the same day we look at it. Most people discover the problem after a rainy week, when they hear dripping inside the firebox, or when a bird starts making noise in the flue and won’t leave.
Gelco caps are built well, but Riverside’s sun is hard on the hardware they’re attached to. The cap itself usually outlasts the screws, the sealant, and sometimes the top row of flue tile it sits on. That’s the failure we see most often: a perfectly good Gelco cap sitting loose or leaning because what holds it down gave up first.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes caps for both round and square flues, and the installation hardware differs by model line. The most common units we service in Riverside are the Gelco stainless and copper series for round flues, plus the multi-flue caps for homes with two or more flues sharing one crown. If you have the original box or paperwork, the model number is usually on a small sticker inside the box or on the underside of the cap itself.
If the label is gone, we identify the mount style by measuring the flue opening and checking how the cap clamps or screws in. Gelco round caps typically fit flues from 6″ to 12″ in diameter, and the difference between a slip-in mount and a clamp mount matters more than the cap’s brand name. One Riverside-specific gotcha: many older homes near the Wood Streets and Magnolia Center have oval clay flue tiles that were fired locally, and their dimensions drift from modern nominal sizing. A cap that says “8 inch” may not seat properly on a true-to-Riverside 1950s flue. We carry adjustable Gelco bands and stainless shims for exactly that situation.
Kindling Chimney Riverside is an independent service company. We’re not affiliated with Gelco, but we stock their caps and know their mounting hardware well enough to tell you when a genuine Gelco part is worth it and when a quality stainless aftermarket equivalent does the same job for less. Most of the time on round flues, the aftermarket option is indistinguishable in fit and lifespan, but we’ll show you both prices and let you decide.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that’s loose or shifted lets rain angle into the flue. The cap itself may look fine from the ground, but the seal at the flue line is broken.
- Animal sounds from the chimney. Birds, squirrels, or raccoons found a gap between the cap mesh and the flue edge. Gelco mesh holds up, but the attachment points are the weak spot.
- Visible rust staining on the flue tile below the cap. This usually means the cap’s screws have rusted through and water is running down the outside of the flue rather than inside it.
- The cap sits tilted or off-center when viewed from the yard. High winds through the Santa Ana season will slowly work a loose band mount sideways. A leaning cap is a cap about to leave the roof.
- Sparks or embers escaping the top during fires. Mesh that has torn or pulled away from the cap frame means the spark arrestor function is gone. In Riverside’s dry summer conditions, that’s a serious fire-safety issue, not just a nuisance.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Gelco cap swap in Riverside, we quote $195 to $320 installed when the existing cap comes off cleanly and the flue tile is in good shape. If the old cap is rusted fast, the flue tile has spalled, or the crown needs touch-up work around the base, the job runs $320 to $420. Multi-flue caps and copper series caps land at the top of that range or slightly beyond.
Every quote includes the cap, stainless mounting hardware, high-temp sealant, removal of the old cap, and a photo of the finished install. The written price comes before any work starts, and there’s no on-the-spot pressure to add services. If we find damage we didn’t expect, we stop, show you photos, explain what changed, and give you a new price before proceeding. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the installation isn’t right, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is leaning, whether the mesh looks torn, and whether you hear water or animals. A pair of binoculars beats a ladder every time. We’d rather have Riverside homeowners do a ground-level visual check and call us with what they see than climb up with a drill and a trip to urgent care on their mind.
This is not a part we recommend DIYing. The work happens at roof height, on a surface that’s often sloped, while leaning over an open flue. The dangers are real: a fall from even a single-story Riverside roof can be life-changing, and a dropped tool goes straight down the flue. Danny Cortes has spent years seeing what happens when a well-meaning homeowner tries to save a few hundred dollars and ends up paying for a cap, a new flue repair, and a roof patch. If your Gelco cap has failed, call us at (831) 218-8547. We’ll come out, look, and give you a straight answer.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Riverside’s climate, while the mounting hardware and sealant usually need attention every 4 to 6 years even if the cap itself is still solid. The sun does more damage than the rain here, which means we often replace hardware without replacing the cap. Call (831) 218-8547 and we’ll tell you which part of the system actually failed.
If the mesh is torn but the frame is sound, we can often re-mesh the cap for less than a full replacement. If the bands have rusted or the frame is warped, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you photos of what we find before we quote either one.
Most Riverside chimney cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. We’ll lay down drop cloths inside, protect the roof, and take a photo of the finished work before we leave. You’ll know the price before we start, and there won’t be any surprises when we’re done.
We keep common Gelco round-flue caps in stock on the service vehicle, along with stainless aftermarket equivalents and matching hardware. If you need a multi-flue or copper series Gelco cap, we’ll typically have it within a few days and can schedule the installation once it’s in hand. We also carry parts and caps for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems.
